01 / The difference

No language barrier

Traditional directions rely on words. FloorCode uses simple numbered decisions to minimise cognitive load, without needing positioning infrastructure or network connectivity.

Blue-dot and image-based systems can also overcome language barriers, but advanced positioning solutions can be costly to install and maintain. FloorCode offers a simpler, lower-cost alternative.

Whatever the visitor’s language, the route stays the same: one number, one decision, no translation.

02 / The idea

How it works

Instead of reading directions in a particular language, interpreting floorplans or remembering written instructions, visitors follow a short sequence of numbers. Each number corresponds to a decision at a marked point in the building.

1Forward
2Left
3Right
4Next Forward
↑3up to floor 3
↓1down to floor 1

A visitor needs to recognise only the next number, rather than understand the entire building. The goal is standardisation without replacement: a shared, language-independent method that works alongside existing signs and maps.

A major benefit of FloorCode: once the numbers are positioned, no signage change is ever needed for re-routing — just change the FloorCode sequence.

THE ADVANTAGES

FloorCode benefits

  • Language-independent

A universal system of numbered decisions, without translated instructions.

  • Simple numbers

Less information to process at each junction, helping reduce cognitive load and stress.

  • Low installation cost

Version 1 could cost under £10,000 to install, depending on the building and scope.

  • No electronics for Version 1

The paper-based system needs no electronics, software or mobile phone.

  • Choice of deployment

Use Version 1 without a smartphone, or Version 2 with the standalone mobile app.

  • Offline Version 2 app

Navigation does not depend on a network connection or indoor positioning infrastructure.

  • No signage changes for rerouting
  • Works with existing wayfinding

Can be retrofitted alongside existing signs, maps and wayfinding systems.

  • Suitable for complex environments

Designed for hospitals, airports, campuses and other complex indoor spaces.

  • Version 1: paper-based · Version 2: app-based
03 / Two complementary versions

The two versions

FloorCode is an exceptionally low-cost, easy-to-understand wayfinding system available in two versions: paper-based and smartphone-enabled. Neither requires indoor positioning infrastructure or network connections.

VERSION 01 · PAPER-BASED

Simple by design.

Every visitor—whether a patient, guest, delivery driver or maintenance worker—receives a simple, paper-based FloorCode route to their destination.

Replacement route sheets are available at strategic locations for anyone who becomes lost or needs to change their destination.

No smartphone, network connection or indoor positioning infrastructure required.

04 / Where FloorCode fits

Multiple applications

FloorCode can be deployed rapidly and at minimal cost in virtually any complex indoor environment, providing a universal, language-independent navigation layer that improves and complements existing wayfinding systems.

Once numbered markers are installed at each directional decision point, routes can be changed and destinations added without modifying physical signage — simply generate a new FloorCode sequence.

This creates a scalable, low-maintenance solution with minimal ongoing costs, offering substantial savings and global commercial potential.

05 / The NHS wayfinding challenge

NHS challenge

Have you ever been lost in a hospital?

Across the NHS, hospitals use more than seven independently procured wayfinding systems, ranging from traditional signage to sophisticated digital navigation technologies, with little standardisation between trusts. Implementation can take months and costs can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

FloorCode offers a radically simpler alternative: language-independent navigation, deployable rapidly at exceptionally low cost, with the potential to become a universal standard.

£1.2 billion annually -NHS report 2026

NHS England estimates 8 million missed hospital appointments cost £1.2 billion annually.

This figure covers all reasons for missed appointments, not just poor wayfinding difficulties.

Annual savings of£672.000

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust projected annual savings of up to £672,000 from improved hospital wayfinding, highlighting the potential to reduce missed appointments and the burden on staff repeatedly asked for directions.

£1 million budgetfor wayfinding

In 2026, Moorfields Eye Hospital committed approximately £598,000 to signage, alongside a separate £470,000 digital wayfinding tender. University Hospitals Dorset advertised a £1 million signage contract in 2025.

4,500 staff-hourslost per year

Emory University Hospital USA recorded 4.09 requests per employee per week - time spent 6.9 minutes resulting in 4,500 staff-hours spent on wayfinding assistance.

06 / The commercial opportunity

Partner with FloorCode

The inventor of FloorCode, Bruce Lang, has previously founded, developed and sold two successful technology businesses.

He is seeking partners with the vision, reach and capability to recognise the global potential of FloorCode, arrange a proof-of-concept partner and then capture a substantial share of the $136 billion wayfinding market by 2030.
